Product Care and Maintenance
At Harbour Furniture, we take pride in creating furniture designed for everyday living. With a little regular care and attention, your furniture can continue to look beautiful and perform well for years to come.
When selecting furniture, it is important to consider the environment where it will be placed. Factors such as direct sunlight, heat sources, humidity, pets, and general daily use can all affect the appearance and longevity of furniture over time. Choosing suitable materials for your space and lifestyle will help keep your furniture in great condition.
General Care Tips
A few simple habits can make a big difference:
- Always lift furniture when moving it rather than dragging it.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Avoid sitting on chair backs, chair arms, or tipping dining chairs backwards.
- Use felt pads or floor protectors underneath furniture legs to help protect flooring surfaces.
- Use coasters, placemats, and protective pads to help prevent heat marks, moisture damage, and surface stains.
- Wipe up spills promptly to avoid staining or surface damage.
Fabric Upholstery
To keep fabric upholstery looking fresh, vacuum regularly using a soft brush attachment to remove dust and dirt. Spills and stains should be treated as soon as possible in accordance with the care instructions provided with the product. For deeper cleaning, we recommend using a professional upholstery cleaning service when required.
To help minimise fading, avoid placing fabric furniture in prolonged direct sunlight.
Polyurethane (PU) Upholstery
PU upholstery should be dusted regularly using a soft, dry cloth. Spills should be gently blotted immediately with a clean cloth. If additional cleaning is needed, use a lightly dampened cloth with a mild soap solution, then wipe dry afterwards.
Avoid using harsh detergents, chemical cleaners, or abrasive products, as these may damage the surface finish. Keep PU furniture away from excessive heat and direct sunlight where possible.
Outdoor Cushions
Outdoor cushions benefit from regular rotation and fluffing to help maintain their shape and promote even wear. Over time, cushion fillings and foam may naturally soften or settle with normal use. Loose covers are intentionally designed to provide a relaxed and comfortable appearance.
To help extend the life of outdoor fabrics, we strongly recommend using protective outdoor covers when the furniture is not in use. Prolonged exposure to rain and strong UV conditions may cause fading and weathering over time.
Outdoor PE Rattan Furniture
Our PE rattan outdoor furniture is designed for outdoor living; however, regular care will help preserve its appearance and durability. Extended exposure to intense direct sunlight and extreme heat may affect the material over time, particularly during hotter summer months.
For best results, we recommend placing outdoor furniture in shaded areas where possible or using protective covers when not in use for extended periods.
Timber Furniture
Timber furniture can be maintained by regularly wiping surfaces with a soft damp cloth, followed by drying with a clean towel. Avoid leaving water, liquids, or spills sitting on timber surfaces for extended periods.
To help preserve the natural beauty of timber, avoid excessive heat, moisture, harsh chemicals, and abrasive cleaning products. As timber is a natural material, colour variation and gradual changes may occur over time, especially when exposed to sunlight. Rotating decorative items occasionally may help reduce uneven ageing or marking.
Lacquered Surfaces
For lacquered finishes, spills should be cleaned promptly using a soft damp cloth and dried immediately afterwards. Use only non-abrasive cloths when cleaning, as rough materials may scratch the surface.
Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive products. Gentle care and suitable furniture maintenance products will help preserve the finish and appearance over time.
Mattress
Proper mattress care is essential to maintain a comfortable and healthy sleeping environment. Follow these three simple steps to help keep your mattress in excellent condition:
- ROTATE YOUR MATTRESS: Regularly rotating your mattress helps distribute wear evenly and maintain long-lasting comfort. For the first three months, we recommend rotating your mattress once every two weeks. After that, continue to rotate it once every three months. As ours mattresses are one-sided (non-flip), simply rotate the mattress 180 degrees from end to end.
- USE A MATTRESS PROTECTOR: A mattress protector helps safeguard your mattress from spills, stains, and everyday wear. It can also provide protection against allergens such as dust mites, which may contribute to respiratory issues or aggravate allergies. For best results, choose a protector that is breathable and machine washable for easy care and maintenance.
- AVOID JUMPING AND BENDING: Jumping on your mattress can damage the springs and comfort layers, reducing its lifespan and support. Bending or folding the mattress may also harm the internal structure, so it is important to keep it in its original shape at all times, especially when moving or transporting it.
